Britney Spears and fiance in talks to take over MTV’s Newlyweds series - Reality TV World

Yes, I saw this article when it came out last Wednesday but had to let the concept float around in my brain for a few days before I could comment on it. Let me get this straight…Nick & Jessica are done once the third season of Newlyweds wraps up. Okay, that’s fair. The gimmick of the show is starting to wear thin and Jessica’s right…after three years of marriage you’re really no longer a cutesy newlywed couple. So, instead of letting what was a good show for a couple of seasons drift majestically off into the wild blue yonder, we’ll beat it to death by attaching a couple where the breadwinner is on a serious downtick in her career. Okay.

Let’s recap. In this corner we have Nick and Jessica…cute couple, dated three years before getting married. She saved her virginity to give to her husband and what a husband he is. She’s kind of ditzy and he’s a little challenged in the “man around the house” arena but hey, I watched the show for two years so it couldn’t be all that bad.

In that corner…over there…smack dab in the middle of the overexposed spotlight we have Britney and Kevin…cuteness as a couple undecided, “dated” for about 20 seconds before getting engaged. She allegedly saved her virginity to give to her husband but instead gave it up to Justin. Earlier this year, Britney married some Louisiana hometown schmo friend and had her “people” annul the sham 55 hours later. Kevin, the Happy Groom, is the proverbial Baby’s Daddy to two kids and he was never married (or even committed, for that matter) to the babies’ mother. The youngest baby was just born a few weeks ago. Rumors are circulating that Britney bought her own engagement ring.

This kind of reminds me when The Real World jumped the shark (in Miami, I believe) and turned what was originally a cool show about how people interact in new and different situations into a deviantly voyeuristic expose of just how often and how many ways young adults can hook up and do shocking things. Seems par for the course for MTV…just keep pushing that envelope. Besides, doesn’t MTV already have their “edgy” couple in Dave Navarro & Carmen Electra on Till Death Do Us Part?

Better yet…why don’t we put Jessica and Britney on Fox and do an episode of Trading Spouses with them? Send Britney to go live with Nick and CaCee for a week and Jessica to Kevin’s (or rather, Britney’s) apartment in Santa Monica. We’ll watch them exert themselves as the “women of the house” and have them throw parties for family and friends. Jessica can play with Kevin’s kids and continue to ponder when she wants to have baby Lacheys. Heck, I’d watch that.
