These Are a Few Of My Favorite Toys

Ah…now it looks more like Christmas around here. Nothing like a fresh theme to take us into the last week before Christmas, right?

On that note…and on the heels of my post about things which make it seem like the holidays, I wanted to toss out a few toys from my youth which made my heart go all aflutter:

  • Lite-Brite
  • Fashion Plates
  • Legos
  • Barbie and all of her related paraphernalia

One of my favorite Christmas gifts ever was a fantastic Barbie townhouse. Got it one of the Christmases we lived in Wisconsin…so I was little. It was three stories (about as tall as me, at the time) and had an elevator I could operate myself! With a piece of string! The inflatable furniture I got to go along with it was…quite trendy at the time? The only thing that place was missing was a macrame plant hanger, and maybe a fondue set.

The one thing I always wanted - but never got - was an Easy Bake Oven. I don’t know what it was about those things, but the thought of cooking by light bulb always sounded so fun. Sure, I could bake a cake in a real oven…but where’s the joy in that? I was never big into the whole Cabbage Patch doll thing…and of course, games for my Atari 2600 were always appreciated - like Pitfall. Oh, that Pitfall Harry - what a man.

What about you?

Eh, I had the Easy Bake Oven (No wait, I had the Holly Hobbie Oven). I liked to use it, but I always preferred using “Mom’s oven”. Madi had the Easy Bake, we went through the same thing, she preferred using my oven.

As far as Lego’s go, I do not recall ever seeing a single Lego in our house. My sons have more than made up for that though!

I love all of the Strawberry Shortcake Dolls I got one year (and a Strawberry shaped carrier). That same year I got a “Portable record Player” which I could play my Shawn Cassidy “Da Doo Run Run” single on…over and over and over again.

Ooh! Lite Brite! And I got an oven, made one cake, and it was broken.

I also loved my Snoopy Snow Cone Machine.

Wow, this is hard! i’ve had so many nice gifts over the years. I guess the one that sticks out in my mind is the electric guitar and amp I got when I was about 14 or 15.

I remember my easy bake being a delightful shade of avacado green and I think it was supposed to look like the oven/range combos. Ick.
I had a Barbie townhouse too. Except *I* had green/orange/gold blow up furniture. Is it any wonder I HATE those colors now?

Dictionary of Corporate Bullshit Word of the Day

dial it down/dial it back: To reduce intensity; often used in reference to a person's behavior; to calm down, relax, or get a freaking grip for God's sake; new millennium version of "take a chill pill" or "chilling out"; when referring to a presentation or sales pitch, to be less aggressive, with the hope the audience will not be aware they are being snowed with a soft sell.
