The Real World: 27, Snarkwife: 3
You know, I remember a time when I used to look forward to weekends, because I didn’t (for the most part, usually) have to do any work. Sure I had housework…cleaning, laundry, home improvement, etc. - but that kind of thing can actually be fun because no one is judging your performance. Even just as recently as two years ago, when CU was in Iraq…I’d get up on Saturday mornings and read the paper, drink some coffee, do some laundry…and that was it. If I wanted to go to Michael’s or the mall or just sit around and watch dumb shows on TV, I could…with no guilt. Because, I didn’t have any other responsibilities. Those were good times.
Now though…with school…it’s like my free time has begun to cackle at me: “Adios, Snarkwife…try not to lose your mind over the next two years. And oh by the way, good luck trying to enjoy your weekends. I know you used to enjoy going off and doing fun things with Capt. So-Called-UberHusband, but those days are over, at least temporarily.”
Yeah, I get this was my choice - and ultimately, the commitment will be worth it when I graduate and can find a job worthy of my skills and ambition, but in the meantime…I’ll whine. It’ll be just like it was when I was 19, except this time…I’m shooting for more than $8 an hour when I finish school.
CU and I are just hanging out today…watching TV, and waiting a bit before we make the pre-Super Bowl guacamole and pop the brownies into the oven. We have a Campisi’s take-n-bake pizza ready for halftime, and I’ve tossed a blanket over the hundred pages of articles I need to review for my market research class. I need to get back in touch with my inner Young Adult Snark - the one who would have blown off working and settled for a C in her classes. I have no idea what happened to that girl. I suspect she was shaken out of me in the big Northridge earthquake of ‘94.

That was hard for me too when I was doing my MBA at night, but one thing that helped is that being in real estate, if things were slow, I could do some of the work while I was sitting in the office doing nothing. That helped, but for the first part of the program, I worked full-time and pretty much had to sacrifice all day Sunday to do the homework. It will be so worth it when it’s over though:)
