You Don’t Expect Your Girlfriend To Screw You During a Dinner Party
CU and I got into a rather heated argument last night (well, heated for us) regarding last night’s episode of The Office. Having been really disappointed by the return of My Name is Earl, I half-wondered if I was losing my sense of humor…was especially excited about the mayhem which could only be inspired by a dinner party at Michael and Jan’s condo.
Know what? I didn’t think it was all that funny. Sure, there were some funny quips (Jan referencing Pam’s “doodles”) and amusing scenes (the oft-maligned “house tour” - how often have you forgotten to put the video camera away?). Plus, nothing makes me laugh harder than when television shows try to hide the pregnancies of their stars. At least they didn’t go the floppy hat route with Angela.
BUT.
But this thing between Jan and Michael…I am so over it. I’m over the meanness and the contempt. I’m over feeling embarrassed for TV show characters when I watch the two of them in a scene together. The last episode we saw was “The Deposition,” which was definitely funny. Although Jan was being a complete bitch, maybe it’s because she was surrounded by a group of people that I found it more palatable. I had hoped when we returned after nearly six months away…that Michael would have at least thrown Jan out, rather than give her a workspace.
But anyway, back to the argument. CU thought last night’s ep was hilarious…I thought it was anything but. He thought the petty arguments and nuances of their relationship were funny. I thought they were dysfunctional. When Jan threw the Dundee at the TV…apparently, that was funny. You know, kind of like when Roy attacked Jim.
Can we get out of Michael’s house and back into the actual office? I need that. Thank you.

i’ve watched it twice now and while it was funny the first time, i kept on cringing the 2nd time. yes, we need to get back into the office. honestly, i know this is comedy, but how can Michael put up with her? i wouldn’t even wish that on my enemy. well, maybe… hehehe…

Yes, I will agree Earl has been off it’s game since the strike ended. The last episode in January was great and the first half of last week’s was nicely done.
That said, the other two we’ve got haven’t been quite all there for me. And the less said about Paris Hilton the better.
With the Office, I cringed at the Jan/Michael fights, but yet still was laughing at them as well. The passive-aggressive fighting taken to a whole new level was terrific. But I think the show needs to show them breaking up or have a scene like when Michael ran away to ride the trains where Jan goes after him and you see WHY this relationship works. It’s like my view on Michael in the Office…yes, 90% of the time he is a complete train wreck, but we see occasionally why he’s still there because he gets a big win.
