Could you go without your computer for a day?
Man, that’s like asking me to go without air…or water…or Twitter.
I was very proud of myself on Tuesday. CU and I were on a brisk 30-minute walk when I declared, “I think we can leave the laptop at home when we go to Chicago this weekend.”
The scary thing though, was CU countered with all sorts of if/then statements like, “Well, if we do need to print something out, then there’s a business center.” When was the last time we ever printed anything on vacation? Um…never. “Well, if we need directions to someplace…then I guess we could call and ask.” It was a weird conversation.
But leaving the computer completely off on May 3? Sadly, I cannot turn my computer off for the whole day. The Summer semester starts on May 3. What if I turn the computer on, print out my syllabi and then immediately turn it back off? Would that count?

define computer… that could mean anything from a wristwatch to your beloved iPhone? I bet even your oven has a computer in it, certainly your DVR… no TV on May 3rd either.

Whose wristwatch has a computer in it anymore? LOL.
I would suspect it depends on your personal definition of “computer.” If when someone asks you what kind of computer you have you say “an LG 52″ LCD,” then this day of rest would apply to your TV.
When I think of a computer I think of the things I do on mine (PC, Mac, iPhone)…Twitter, surf the Internet and check emails. So…anything which allows me to do those things would be included on the list of banned items.
My oven is circa 1994…all it could probably do is ping Prodigy.

We still bring our computer on trips, just to get directions or recommendations on where to go (like yelp.com). It’s been pretty helpful, even in Chicago where we couldn’t decide which deep dish pizza to visit (we went to Giardino’s on Michigan).
We’ll be gone that same weekend to Vegas. I can’t wait!
